Description
This everything bagel recipe delivers bakery-style golden bagels topped with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion, garlic, and kosher salt all made fresh at home for unbeatable flavor.
Ingredients
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F)
3 ½ cups bread flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 egg, for egg wash
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
1 tablespoon dried minced onion
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Instructions
In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Add flour and salt. Mix until a dough forms. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces.
Shape each piece into a ball. Poke a hole in the center and gently stretch into a ring.
Let shaped bagels rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 425°F and bring a large pot of water to a boil.
Boil each bagel for 1 minute per side, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Beat the egg and brush over each bagel.
In a small bowl, combine sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic, onion, and kosher salt.
Dip or sprinkle the topping mixture onto the egg-washed bagels.
Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool before slicing and serving.
Notes
For a deeper flavor, add a tablespoon of barley malt syrup to the boiling water. Substitute egg wash with plant-based milk for a vegan version. Freeze cooled bagels in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months.
