Flour – 4 tbsp (for béchamel sauce)
Nutmeg – A pinch (optional, for béchamel sauce)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C)
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant
Add ground beef and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste
Pour in tomato sauce and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. Add chopped fresh basil if desired
In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to form a roux. Gradually add warm milk, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg
In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with beaten eggs and a bit of salt
Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Add a layer of Barilla lasagna noodles
Top with meat sauce, dollops of ricotta mixture, a drizzle of béchamel sauce, and a sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan
Repeat layers until all ingredients are used. Finish with a generous layer of mozzarella and Parmesan on top
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes until golden and bubbly
Let the lasagna rest for 15-20 minutes before slicing and serving
Notes
For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the meat sauce while it simmers
Make-ahead tip: assemble the lasagna and refrigerate it overnight to allow the flavors to develop even more
