Description
Easy Lo Mein Sauce is the secret to rich, flavorful noodles with a perfect balance of savory, slightly sweet, and umami flavors. This quick and easy sauce takes just a few minutes to make and pairs beautifully with stir-fried vegetables, meats, or tofu. Whether you’re making a restaurant-style lo mein or looking for a versatile stir-fry sauce, this recipe is a must-have for effortless, delicious meals.
Ingredients
Soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, garlic powder, ginger powder, water or chicken broth, and cornstarch create a rich and flavorful sauce. Light soy sauce provides the salty base, while dark soy sauce deepens the color and taste. Oyster sauce adds a slightly sweet umami flavor, while sesame oil brings a nutty aroma. A touch of sugar balances the saltiness, and garlic and ginger enhance the overall flavor. Cornstarch can be added for a thicker consistency.
Instructions
In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, garlic powder, and ginger powder until well combined. Add water or chicken broth to adjust the consistency, and if a thicker sauce is desired, dissolve cornstarch in the mixture. Heat a saucepan over medium heat and pour in the sauce, stirring continuously for about one to two minutes until it thickens slightly and turns glossy. Remove from heat and use immediately or allow it to cool before storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Notes
For a spicier version, add a teaspoon of chili flakes or a drizzle of sriracha. Hoisin sauce can be used instead of oyster sauce for a vegetarian-friendly alternative. If making a gluten-free version, swap soy sauce for tamari and check that the oyster sauce is gluten-free. To enhance the depth of flavor, a splash of fish sauce or mushroom sauce can be added. If the sauce thickens too much after refrigeration, a little water or broth can be stirred in before reheating.
