Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
1 onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (28 oz each) crushed tomatoes
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1/4 cup red wine (optional)
2 teaspoons dried basil
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add onions and cook until softened.
Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Add ground beef and sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
Drain excess fat if needed.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper.
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Serve over pasta or use in lasagna.
Notes
For a deeper flavor, prepare the sauce a day in advance and reheat before serving. Add mushrooms or spinach for a variation.
